The 2021 Military Ball hosted by Foreign Wars Veterans Auxiliary Waylon Staffan Post 4518 of Sallisaw on Friday offered veterans and other guests in attendance a dinner followed by recognition awards and a silent auction with approximately 90 people present.

Proceeds from the annual event, held in the VFW building, north of Sallisaw on US Highway 59, provide Christmas gifts to veterans staying at local nursing homes, according to Stacie Van Lenten, president of the ‘auxiliary VFW.

“This is something that we do every year and has been for about 20 years to my knowledge,” said Van Lenten. “The veterans go out with their guests and the ladies don their formal dress for the event, which includes toast, dinner and a cake presentation.

The menu, prepared by Rowan’s Restaurant in Stilwell, included pork chops or grilled chicken, a baked potato, glazed carrots, broccoli, and a bun and dessert.

The event also includes the awards ceremony, silent auction and live auction.

According to Van Lenten, the event raised around $ 5,000 which will be used to purchase gifts, not only for veterans, but also for the angels of the angel trees for other residents of the nursing homes.

“I think everyone had a great time and the food was good. We simply thank all the local businesses and everyone who contributed to the success of this event. We wouldn’t be able to do it without them, ”said Van Lenten.
