Fort St. John artist rallies support for Ukraine with silent auction

A Fort St. John artist is raising financial support for Ukraine today with a live silent auction at Safeway.

“I asked my employer and they said yes. I know a lot of friends who are also talented, so I asked them and they said they would help,” said artist Diana Hofmann, who organizes initiative.

The auctioned art will feature sunflowers, the national flower of Ukraine. Safeway will donate cupcakes to the cause in addition to hosting the silent auction, which will be decorated by Hofmann.

Proceeds will go directly to the National Bank of Ukraine, bringing relief directly to the front lines.

Hofmann says she understands the frustration of many Canadians unable to do much for Ukraine as Russia continues its invasion and innocent civilians are killed.

“I just think it’s been all bad news lately and I wanted to help out somehow,” she said. “I thought how awful it was for people who have family there. I have the time and the energy to do it, so I did it.

Hofmann is a member of both the artists’ association Flying Colors and the local potters’ guild, where her love for art really began to blossom, she said.

“It’s inspiring to see everyone, and especially artists doing little fundraisers everywhere,” Hofmann added.
