Since February 2012, Hallwalls has presented 20 drawing rallies (all live except for two pandemic Zoom editions) featuring hundreds of regional artists drawing live in two 45-minute sessions, with 18 artists per session. The completed drawings are then made available for purchase via online auctions. Opening bids for all designs remain at $39.

The only problem with the drawing rally — and it’s a good problem — is the intense enthusiasm of the participating artists. There is no shortage of artists eager and eager to participate. Some have done it several times and are always eager to do it again. (Only one – Alicia Paolucci – has participated in each drawing rally.) But every drawing rally – and this one is no exception – always includes entirely new artists who have never participated before.

In this rally, Becky Brown, Julia Dzwonkoski, Taylor Heald, Tayron Lopez, Avalene Musik, Karle Norman, XIII and Michael Tunkey are ALL new faces for this exciting event.

As curator John Massier explains:

“I never have to convince when I invite artists to take part in a drawing rally. They are always grateful to be asked. And, interestingly, nobody really improvises – 45 minutes goes by very quickly, so even the most seasoned artists usually come up with a plan of what they’re going to draw. Sometimes they even timed themselves and did practice drawings beforehand. The artists take this event seriously and everyone shows up always ready to go. Fun fact – when it was originally conceived it was intended to happen once a year, but the first event proved far too popular for artists and audiences alike, so we opted for a bi-annual model.

There is never a theme – artists are free to draw whatever they want. Pen, pencil, acrylic, felt, all drawing media are allowed, except oil paint. All designs are done on a 12 x 18 inch sheet of archival paper supplied by Hallwalls. No preparatory notes are allowed until the clock has started. Reference photos, objects or even models are allowed.

The first drawing session is from 7:15 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The second drawing session is from 8:15 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Bidding for all artwork begins at the start of the event and WILL ONLY BE DONE ONLINE at hallwalls.cbo.io. Bidding will continue for 26 hours until Thursday, March 3 at 9 p.m.

Cash bar with specialty cocktails designed by Elizabeth Licata.
The music will be provided by the drawing of the pillars of the abcdj rally.

Hallwalls will observe all relevant COVID protocols established by Erie County and followed by Babeville, where the drawing rally takes place.

Expect vaccinations to be checked at the door.
