RM Sotheby’s sees Arizona success as first live auction surpasses $ 35 million and 90% direct sales


Presented by RM Sotheby’s – On Friday, January 22, RM Sotheby’s kicked off its 2021 auction calendar with the company’s 22nd annual auction in Arizona, held this year at the OTTO Car Club in Scottsdale with limited attendance, by appointment -you only in person, making 35,065,900 in total sales with 90 percent of all lots finding new homes. The one-day auction saw bidders from 35 countries around the world bidding in the hall and over the phone and the Internet.

The undisputed star of the auction was a very original 1955 Jaguar Type D with a significant racing history, which was sold to a telephone bidder for a final amount of $ 6,000,000. Wrapped in red with an interior tailored to match, the car was one of a very small number of D-Types to be so finished when new. Bought new from Bernie Ecclestone by British racer Peter Blond and retaining many of its original components today, the well-documented example goes to its new keeper as a worthy candidate for vintage competition at the highest levels and the most prestigious.

1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Tourer by Corse

The second highest price achieved was an elegant and extremely rare 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Tourer by Corse, one of eight examples bodied by the bodybuilder and only two in a four-seater configuration, which grossed $ 4,735,000. Retaining its original chassis, engine, gearbox, differential and bodywork, the Bugatti came up for auction in Arizona with a known and fascinating ownership history, including time spent in the esteemed collections of Judge North and General Lyon. Other pre-war classics brought in hefty prices as well, including a Full Classic CCCA 1932 Cadillac V-16 Coupe Cabriolet by Fisher, one of only 14 examples ever built, four of which survive today, and one of the few examples built with a factory rear-mounted spare part, which exceeded its high estimate and went into a new house for $ 1,022,500; and a multi-award-winning CCCA Full Classic 1933 Packard Twelve Individual Custom Cabriolet Sedan by Dietrich, one of two existing and a fully matching example, which grossed $ 819,000.

The best sales were also highlighted by several modern supercars, including one 2020 McLaren Speedtail, the first example of the brand’s most advanced and fastest road car to ever be sold at public auction. A masterpiece of automotive engineering with a central driving position and three-seat configuration, the car was one of 106 examples produced, paying homage to the 106 McLaren F1s. Heavily optioned by MSO and showing only 30 miles on the odometer at the time of cataloging, Chassis no. 36 went to its next owner for $ 3,277,500. Additional well-sold supercars include a 2019 McLaren Senna, the 95th of 500 produced and sporting dramatic visual carbon fiber bodywork, at $ 1,044,000; a desirable Ford GT 2019 “Light”, a special option available only to selected applicants, which brought in $ 967,500; a 1993 Cizeta V16T, one of nine copies completed and ordered new by the Brunei Royal Family, which fetched $ 665,000; and an exclusive factory 1998 RUF Turbo R, largely mechanically discounted in October 2020, which exceeded its high presale estimate of $ 575,000 and sold for a final amount of $ 764,000.

Three highly sought after 1950s sports cars also won top ten spots. Presented at the 1954 New York World Motor Show and the 1954 Geneva Motor Show, the exclusive 1954 Ferrari 375 America Coupé by Vignale, one of three examples bodied by the bodybuilder, sold for $ 2,557,000. The Gran Turismo came up for auction in Arizona in its stunning original burgundy and silver gray finish on a beige interior and retaining its original 4.5-liter Lampredi V-12 engine. Another classic Ferrari, the 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Alloy Coupe by Boano, also caught the attention of bidders, selling for a final amount of $ 1,352,500. One of 14 alloy-bodied coupes produced by Carrozzeria Boano between 1956 and 1958, the Classiche-certified Ferrari went to its new owner fitted with its corresponding V-12 engine, gearbox and differential and in an exceptional state of restoration. To complete the group, a delicious 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster shown in light green metallic on a dark green interior with a dark green soft top sold for $ 1,066,500.

RM Sotheby’s continues its 2021 auction calendar with the company’s first European auction of the year, set for February 13 in Paris. The auction will be broadcast live with remote-only auction options, showcasing around 65 of the best pre and post-war sports, racing and touring cars, along with a selection of memorabilia. The sale in Paris is led by a factory supercharged 4½-liter Bentley from 1931, one of the 50, which has retained many of its original components, as well as a phenomenal collection of single-owner Lamborghinis, each presented in an exceptional state of restoration.
