Sexual Assault Support Center Hosting Silent Auction of Local Art

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — A local sexual assault support center, The Center at 909, could always use more money to fund its various services, especially since it recently lost thousands of dollars in government funding. On Thursday, October 27 from 6-8 p.m., he will be hosting a fundraising event he calls Heart of the Cause. There will be a silent auction of local artwork, a raffle, hors d’oeuvres, wine, champagne and possibly a live musician.

Those who purchase tickets will automatically be entered into the raffle but may purchase additional raffle tickets.

“It will mostly be a social event of sorts,” said Abby Moorman, victims’ advocate at the 909 Center. “We want everyone to have the opportunity to interact with our staff and advocates and meet the people who provide this service and then also have the chance to enjoy a fun night.”

Moorman said the money raised from the silent auction will go directly to helping survivors of sexual assault.

There is currently no limit to the number of people who can attend the event.

“We would like to have 50 to 100 attendees,” Moorman said. “We would like to have much more than that. And individuals can donate and participate in our raffle even if they are not present.

Moorman said the event was not just about raising money, but also about giving community members a chance to see the facility and appreciate the work the Center does at 909. The free and confidential services from the Center to 909 include a 24-hour crisis hotline, medical advocacy and accompaniment, on-site forensic examinations, legal advocacy and referrals, therapy services and more.

The 909 Center would like to increase its programs, Moorman said. He currently has a support group for adult women, but would like to have one for men as well.

“Our hope, our dream is to remove the stigma of sexual violence and help individuals realize that it affects everyone in the same way that other health crises affect everyone,” Moorman said.

Tickets for this event are $50 per person. To purchase tickets, call (706) 221-1033 or email [email protected]

The Center at 909 is located at 909 Talbotton Road, Suite A in Columbus.

The deadline for submitting works of art to the auction was Saturday, October 1.
