Silent auction to benefit the Downeast Gleaning Initiative of Healthy Acadia


Healthy Acadia is hosting a “Healthy Foods for All” online silent auction throughout June to raise funds in support of the Downeast Gleaning Initiative. Auctions are a range of mouthwatering local experiences, including a private four-course dinner for eight prepared by Sassafrass Catering, an overnight stay in Lubec, fresh Maine lobster, a Bar Harbor getaway package, and a waterfront sauna. lake and dinner at Kendall Farm Cottage on Lake Boyden.

“Sassafrass Catering is delighted to put our talents to work for the Gleaning Initiative,” said Owner and Chef Amanda Kendall. “With all the isolation and missed opportunities that COVID-19 has brought, we are delighted to offer a private, catered dinner so people can safely reconnect around food.”

All proceeds from winning submissions will be donated to the Healthy Acadia Gleaning Initiative, which makes nutritious local products available to hungry individuals and families in our communities. Gleaning Initiative staff and volunteers partner with dozens of local farms and home gardeners to harvest surplus fruits and vegetables and deliver fresh produce to a large network of community pantries and free meal programs. Since 2013, the Gleaning Initiative has distributed over 300,000 pounds of healthy, locally grown produce to food safety organizations in Hancock and Washington counties.

“We believe everyone deserves access to healthy food, regardless of income or background,” said Katie Freedman, Director of Food Programs at Healthy Acadia. “In a region where one in five children live in food insecure households, supplying pantries with fresh, local produce helps ensure that community members and their children who have it most. need have the opportunity to maintain a healthy diet, reduce their diet. related disease and achieve better academic results.
