Sound Rivers goes virtual for second silent auction

WASHINGTON, NC – Instead of a pencil auction, the click of a mouse will determine the winning bidders at the annual Sound Rivers silent auction. The local environmental nonprofit – based in Washington, New Bern and Raleigh – has gone virtual with its auction for the second year in a row.

“Bidding for Clean Water” went live on Friday morning and is open to the public. For the past 35 years, the auction has been held in conjunction with the Sound Rivers Oyster Roast on the grounds of the Washington Civic Center. The pandemic turned the annual tradition upside down last year, and again this year.

“We are grateful to have the opportunity to upgrade to an online auction, when for two years in a row we have had to cancel what has always been our biggest fundraiser of the year, and a big event, to that, ”said Heather Deck, executive director of Sound Rivers.

Items for the auction are donated by supporters of Sound Rivers, and items on offer this year range from work by local artists to outdoor adventures; vacation stays with restaurant dining packages in Greenville, New Bern and Tarboro.

“We’ve always had a selection of items for auction, but this year those who donated have gone above and beyond,” Deck said.

Deck said the shift to virtual fundraisers is the number of nonprofits that have adapted to operate during a pandemic.

“The revenue lost from the cancellation of in-person events has posed challenges to our work in 2021 and will do so again in 2022, but ultimately the health and well-being of our supporters is more important to us, ”she said.

The Sound Rivers silent auction is open until 5 p.m. on November 19. It can be viewed at https://auctria.events/SRAuction2021.

Founded in 2015 with the amalgamation of two of the state’s oldest base conservation organizations – the Neuse Riverkeeper and Pamlico-Tar River Foundations – Sound Rivers monitors, protects and defends the watersheds of the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico rivers, covering nearly a quarter of North Carolina. .
